This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Virginia! But, flashback to earlier this year when my dearest friend asked me if I wanted to go to Williamsburg, Virginia with her during the summer, and my automatic response was “yes!”. As one of the thirteen colonies, I knew Virginia had a lot of history. I have never been to the east coast and I love history, so what a perfect way to see a part of the other coast and learn about a piece of America in a different and more engaging way.
What is the Colonial Williamsburg Institute?
The Colonial Williamsburg Institute provides teachers an opportunity to travel to Williamsburg, Virginia to experience part of colonial America in person. Teaching about the colonies and colonists is an important standard in fifth grade history. Therefore, this program flies and houses teachers out into Williamsburg where they follow a structured schedule to learn about our country’s history and take back what we learn to our students. You get to stay in one of the colonial houses, experience how life was back in the 18th century (actually, it is like you are living in that century!), experience the location of historic battles and sites at Jamestown and Yorktown, and engage in lessons that you can use with your students. How cool right!??!?
At first, it seemed a little daunting, but it was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. I’m not going to lie, it was hot, humid, very wet at times, and you were exhausted by the end of the day. But, you go through these experiences with amazing teachers you meet and hang out with through out the week. I met so many great teachers who are now my friends. We go through a week of exhaustion, excitement, fun, and a love for learning and teaching together.
I was blessed to be able to travel to different states this summer and I have to admit, going to Virginia was one of my favorites. My teacher friends, give this opportunity a chance if you haven’t already! Take this chance to experience the history you are teaching your students and bring your knowledge about what you learn back to them.
