It still feels like a dream to me, but yes, I BOUGHT MY FIRST HOME! I’m shocked. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am and am so thankful for my family and friends who have helped me along the way. This may seem impossible, especially out in Los Angeles, but it is definitely doable. So, I am sharing my tips to buying a home below!
My Top Tips to Buying House
You all probably know this, but it is so crucial that you save and start early! You need to have a savings and put money into it every month until you reach your goal. I was very fortunate to be able to live with relatives while going to school and my first few years as a teacher. Not paying for rent saved me tons of money and made saving easier. I invested money that should be going into rent into my savings for my own home.
MANAGE HOW YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY AND MAKE SOME SACRIFICES
Yes, we have expenses and bills, but if you manage how you spend your money, you should be able to put some into a savings account. It was tough to have to say no to traveling at times and cut down on dessert, but it is worth it. If you can manage your money well, you can still save while traveling on a budget and eating foods you like.
Track how much you are spending and cut back on some of your spendings. For me, I cut back on eating out and shopping. I would meal prep for my week and maybe buy one thing I really want for myself a month. You don’t have to give up things you like, just be aware of how much you want to save and spend.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK
This one is hard for me. I like to do things on my own and don’t want to burden anyone or feel like I owe someone something. If you have people in your life that genuinely care and love you, don’t be afraid to ask them for help. Also, don’t be afraid to ask people for advice; talk to the people in your life, learn from them, and ask them for help if you need some guidance.
I had friends, relatives, and family friends who would talk to me about home buying since I was in college. Watching, learning, and conversing with people in my life has helped me set a goal for purchasing my own home at a young age. It was important to me that I understand what I wanted and how I can get to my goal. There is so much information around us, so do your research and ask people questions if you don’t understand something or want to learn more.
WORK HARD AND BE PATIENT
I worked hard to get to where I am today and fortunately, I have people in my life who have helped me along the way. Overall, I am so proud of myself for achieving dreams I never thought I could. If you want something, you need to work hard for it, and put in your time and effort to achieve it. Buying a home is a huuuuuge investment and it definitely takes time, so don’t feel defeated if it takes awhile. It is all part of the journey.
ENJOY THE JOURNEY
Growing up is stressful, but we need to remember to appreciate every moment of our lives. Enjoy each chapter and adventure you are on. Life isn’t always easy, but learn from the challenges to create something better for yourself.
Buying a home has been a very long process. I’ve been dreaming and talking about it for so many years and now, I finally own my own space; it all still feels so unreal to me! I know many of us dream about having a place to call home and just know, it is definitely possible! So, don’t give up, save, and work hard! I’m so excited for your future homes ahead.
